Afghanistans education system has traditionally relied on teaching methods of rote memorization and dictation. School enrollment has been poor and dropout rates have been high. Afghanistan has one of the worlds lowest literacy rates. As Afghanistan rebuilds its education system in the aftermath of war, teachers who have not used their skills in decades must be re-trained and must learn modern methods of teaching that encourage critical thinking and other cognitive skills central to learning.
70 teachers will complete a 6-week seminar and learn how to use interactive teaching methods like role-play and group work. Teachers will learn to make lesson plans and integrate new curriculum on peace and health into their classes.
